Muscle Pain Treatment

The Many Causes of Sore Muscles

You wouldn't be able to move without your muscles. These bands of tissue are attached to tendons, which in turn are attached to bones. When a muscle contracts it draws the attached bones together. When it relaxes, the bones move apart. A muscle is made up of many small fibers that twitch to create contractions.

While muscle pain can be caused by certain diseases or by atrophy associated with a long period of disuse, it most often stems from overuse. When the muscles are stressed beyond their capacity, their fibers tear, a condition known as a strain. When that damage is allowed to heal naturally the muscle grows stronger. In the meantime, however, it will feel sore. If the damage never gets a chance to heal properly before more damage occurs, the muscle may develop chronic pain and inflammation. Muscle strain can be caused by:

  • An acute injury
  • Repetitive motions such as throwing a baseball, running, or swinging a tennis racket
  • An untreated spinal misalignment that leads to uneven weight distribution
  • Over-training, or lack of proper warm-up

Our Chiropractor Can Help Relieve Muscular Stresses and Strains

Any chiropractor at Westport Chiropractic & Acupuncture can help you recover from your muscle pain and avoid future muscle pain issues. We perform a physical evaluation while discussing your symptoms and checking your range of motion in the affected muscle. Depending on the underlying cause of the damage, we may prescribe a treatment program that includes:

  • Spinal adjustments to correct your posture, symmetry, and joint position
  • Cold laser therapy to decrease inflammation and encourage muscle healing
  • Acupuncture to relieve acute/chronic pain
  • Lifestyle changes such as healthier work ergonomics or smarter training routines
